Fare Paese

In August 2023, a caravan went into the Southern Apennines briefly inhabiting six small towns and building a traveling festival together with those who do not surrender to the abandonment of villages that, depopulated, lose their voices. Fare Paese (To Be a Village) attempts to return a plurality of perspectives; it is a choral tale where the aspirations and fears of those who return meet and clash with those of the ones who never left.

A Palermo-based collective of videomakers accompanied the FRAPP cultural festival organized by a collective of researchers, architects and urban planners through six towns in the Southern Apennines (Italy). Along the way, the authors constructed dialogues with the communities to intercept an inside look and perspective on the villages, overcoming stereotypical narratives that alternately portray them as places dying of neglect, marginal and poor, or as scenarios for an idealized, bucolic rebirth.
